Ais and Colusa indian cut out canoes (replicas)

These replica dugout canoes honor the Ais and Calusa peoples who navigated the rivers and coastal waters of Florida long before Stuart existed, mastering the art of hollowing cypress and palmetto logs into swift vessels perfectly suited to local waterways.

About this object

Created through a South Fork High School project, they remind us that the waterways that would later define Stuart's identity as the "Sailfish Capital of the World" were first home to skilled Native American craftspeople and traders. The replicas serve as a tangible connection to the deep indigenous roots of Martin County and the ingenious ways early Floridians adapted to and thrived in their environment.
