Black and White Ink of Stuart

This simple bottle of ink, donated by long-time Stuart residents Edna and Bill Bartlett, represents the everyday tools of writing and correspondence that connected this growing community to the wider world in the early-to-mid 20th century.

About this object

Before the age of typewriters and ballpoint pens became universal, Stuart's business owners, schoolchildren, and letter-writers relied on bottled ink and pen to document their lives, from business ledgers at the docks to personal notes sent north to family and friends. The Bartletts' gift reminds us that even the smallest household items carry the mark of Stuart's past.
