Gerard Schaefer: Serial Killer

so uh our April program will be quality Cooper Sam with her book and would you like to invite all of you to come back and second Tuesday but I can't remember this uh May May 1st behind the museum will be opening a preservation and chairs and approachment it'll be five o'clock and in the afternoon on May 1st on May 11th we are going to have Stuart Heritage Museum today with a lot of special events at the Museum which will be advertised before that time May 14th we are having a movie called The Swamp and it has something to do with uh it is a movie that was made by PBS and I came home from

work one day and I never sit down watching at among these people that goes like the Energizer Bunny but this movie was on and I see the Miami in 1926 hurricane and it just went on and on and I watched it for two hours it is but it is all about how airplanes and it is a fascinating picture it's 2019 so unless you've seen it on PBS you haven't seen it but it will be uh on May 14th and activities will be for sale not a lot this is enough for us to cover our across all together uh now I have been up since early this morning and watch my grandson races um this program

was Gloria I hope you're here somewhere thought of doing this program and we have cashed it over for weeks to make sure that this program is presented there is no children in here yeah um I think we had my granddaughter was here who's not a child she is a general Stranger in college and she was here and picked up what I had planned to work on and she said oh I'd love to take this and work on it this is her creation she is now um the director of The Morning News at Berlin TV station and Fort Myers so she can come home every day and we searched it on the internet but because she

worked through some work but it was great in the morning she has a softball team she's very good at it so I didn't get this until yesterday so I have lost him that she put a script to go with it and I'm going to keep this is going to play I'm gonna talk to you and then Adrian is going to give up alien was a reporter and she was here at that time and that's all that she is something super sad our progress here and Bob was the sheriff at the time and okay I think I'm gonna start all right she was born in 1946 in Wisconsin in 1960 his family moved before Audrey he

had a rough childhood not feeling like he didn't end with the sound he did not get along without his father because he felt he favored his sister more as the young child he would torture and kill small animals which is one of the signs of a psychopath or a serial killer character receives are hurting or torturing animals they are grinding along with the family they don't have many friends and they seem very antisocial fantasies included hurting himself and in visualizing murder High School then went to Broward Community College he graduated from Broward Community in 1969 and became a teacher in our family school system he was hired by long after for an appropriate behavior he

didn't want to apart Atlantic University and focus on a law enforcement career in 1971 and at the age of 25. he joined the welcome Manor's Police Department then was fired from there because they are POI to Broward sheriff's office he did not give the job therefore having quote elsewhere Sheriff's Office July 21st 19 72. she will pick up two girls name animal else and Nancy fryer he brought them to a Royal Oak area and fighting him to trees he's in foreign foreign station or Transit Valley was shaking station after his call shaver returned to the side where the girls were Rising that they were gone Sheriff's Office the girl sat down at a detailed searching

and our County Sheriff who was sitting in here right now knew exactly who they were talking about and it had him conversation he sure put him on his back and change our channels to the bed and in September of 72 the abducted tortured and murdered Susan 2017 and Lord just to Jessup 16. he buried at all Hutchinson Iowa decomposing shaved her head Orchard and killed Lauren like he had intended to kill the first two women he used a certain tree to a torture musicians the trees up in the name and the following the Devil's Tree is located in what is now organic park in Port St Lucie he was high up one secondary assault torture

then birthday while they were fighting three there were many men women who witnessed anymore I was saying fine he was shocked but no one knew what was happening police obtained a search warrant and his church shaved your path they found stories that he had been filled with details of torture rate and murder her weapons he called the Horse a slut increase more specifically they found Susan plays his purse jewelry belongings and how it says knives Shaffer was only charged with her place and yet and found guilty in 1973. he was in two life sources in his home 100. he served as far as State Prison the same kind of places open school I don't know

if you know who other school is but he was obnoxious that eventually they think you know John Walsh's son other prisoners hated they say he was a snitch he was a sex offender and an Xbox set on fire twice if officers had found a shaver had writings and short stories about fictional accounts of the emergency committed April 1989 was established and investigators read the letter that he had her two young girls that ate their remains he was accused of panelism cannibalism they are two young girls just eight and nine they are still classified as they saying Shaker is suspected in quotes New York visual cannibalize his victims in the 1930s shake the right Peggy and

windy just happened to y'all in a time when I was curious about vicious training for the Flesh of young girls I assure you these girls are not molested sexually I have found both of them very satisfactory particularly with sauteed onions and peppers I had a hard time with that uh registered Madeline was a former investigator for the Martin County state attorney's office he said that Schaefer never ended by anyone to him but many of the details of the crime for any of his stories he strangled them prayed and buried him he didn't dig them up anyway while chamber was in jail people started going to the Dentistry because the Devil's Tree became a thought were

that worshiped and which practices to become there was a hole in the tree that the city eventually filled with seeing him and it is still standing today at Old Canyon Park on December 3rd 1995 Gerald Schaefer was found seven dead in his Vincent degree oh um killed him and it was convicted for in 1999. Riviera 53 years she was already live in 28 years since love her shape was found with 43 Saddles and a cup on his head and neck his right eye was destroying and six ribs were correctly to this day Gerald John Shaker is a big name in South Florida he is accused of many murders taking place along the Treasure Coast and

Broward County I am going to go back and have her put that back on so that it could be playing while eating pots okay if you walk up she has um some information she also met Schaefer in the courthouse and in prison great Let's Do It um hi there this is a quite a group here and I found out that a lot of you have no idea about who Schaefer is but some others that we do so I'm going to repeat some of the things that Mary had to say and um it's just one of those things that you're like how how do these kind of things how do you tell them without people getting

into this Market you know is someone going to walk in the door or whatever but it works so the last um for all of you attending the survey today and learning about our local residents who started in Broward County and they moved to Orange County and his stories are true dramatic and in many cases it is done it by a serial killer who okay what's going to happen um so let's get started my family moved to Fort Lauderdale in 19th century and later he and his love were moved to Old Man's area he was in high school at the time and in the early 1970 he was he was attending classes and met several females

getting to know them Shaker who was in his teams because became obsessed with women in panties and also became peeping Tom sign in various neighborhoods one of those first neighborhood folks was an extra neighbor her name was Lee Heyman and she wound up murdered in 1969 after he graduated from the Saint Thomas Aquinas High School Shaker went into college during this time he was married he became a teacher of a soon fire in the government inappropriate behavior according to the principle of the school accurately turned down a priesthood um and you also figuring out a lot of different jobs like he that he came along first person graduating as children at the end of 1971

5 in July of 1972. Shaker shot two mountain ladies walking to the beach Denmark County and these girls they were just living in a place in the the area from here is they were they were getting into one of the one global yeah um uh doing what the local Place yeah okay um so shaper um walking down the street going out to A1A and then to the beach and uh Shaker shops both of the girls and talk to him about County and he asked the girls if he could take them to the beach and drop them off in this verse said these girls um and they said yes then he asked if he could return

the following day today and they said yes they would love to because they were four we did a lot of good big short pants so um and the bird sure they were hitchhiking and then when he got a daughter in her car and he was able to take them off all the way to preach but he didn't want to go to the beach he wanted to know if they would go to afford able the court was really an old building and still around and probably kick it over because that's how old it is but they said Yes again and they reached to go to uh go up this route to the board um he picked

up Shaker to pick up the two teenagers who were really shopping again and of course one way to the beach yes will be asked them to be with them during the time he adopted then took them to the remote was trees where what happened to heal them or sell them as prostitution however you receive the call on his police radio and he had to leave his girls to the Lord is in their their family and and soon shaver said that he wouldn't be back when according to the girls still hung up he said that he would by the time he retired the two young ladies were able to to be released themselves one fell in

the room and was able to get into the river water and was able to swim a little bit and she can see enough water so she could walk all the way and the other one she actually came down before road which was dirt and sand and everything else but she was able to get it down also because they don't have a sheriff showed up because one of our our men would work the day of photographs and the sheriff's department he got those people to the girls that came to him first to see if they could find out what was going on what happened they they were telling all kinds of things and then um Shaker

came along after that and found the root it sucks he immediately apologize at all and explained that he wanted to teach a lesson to three chapters these were the two girls that were visiting the children walking to the beach on the crochet and of course the volunteered to bring them there and then the second day before it was it was good together where he tied them up as far as the two girls were ages 18 and 17. Shaker returned to the woods and found the girls talking to the sheriff Joel he claimed that he had that on something wrong and foolish I'm so sorry that it did because he didn't want the girls to make

their kidnapped or that they were killed so in order to vote what's going on thank you they went to the um office and Schaefer and the two girls to do this that's what occurred in both cases share your floss um or him to do the station where he stripped him out of thatch and encouraged him with false he also never allowed him because um and after coaching Shaker was released two months was abducted tortured and murdered in a season he she they two months later Shaker saw abducted tortured and and murdered Susan place 17 and Georgia Jessica and he married on as much as an island right north of the Fairfield California in St Lucie

town and most of our clinics will be similar but this this group is put in the other in the other town in December safer appears before in relationship with the Abduction of the two girls who was saved to the people to be guilty to the one in charge of that soft or when she received the sentence of one year because they knew the knew their daughters and and the classes with Schaefer in Robert Downey they advise and Sheriff about Schaefer and their their daughters in April 1973 oh I should say they they went to the prince of Bayview in Ark County and then the France went over and got another person to come and give

them a whole survey about the girls so that I think the sheriff's department and any uh local media know what happened with these girls in April 1973 over six months since they had abashed the decomposing butchered remains a place in just the fact in a girl secondly talk to a jury at one of the points and had bash um while hitchhiking as he said and in other similarities who had gotten away the police obtained a search warrant for sheffer's home with his wife and his mother in the house and he reviewed the home jewelry Diaries one case of tea from personal women and girls who have been missing good degrees recent years some of the

jewelry was for the where one of his neighbors who lived as short of paper when they were teenagers keep action 1969 in Fort Lauderdale she was never charged with in her case because obviously they needed some other information her son was found in Palm Beach County in April 1978 and if she was identified by multiple political discovered at the construction site in Palm Beach guilty but this is a facility in North Portland I've already shoots in that he was linked to around 30 missing South Florida and Morgan County why they wanted it in other counties that he went to police okay um Sam turning off so whatever for um cell said he wanted to save

the other body in his place or just sort of Trials or a lot of news in the courtroom and as someone told me he had the body as well as so he's here with two guys kind of doing the same thing in the area uh well I don't think there's a saw two prisoners doing bad things and it was actually going to surely each other he told his prison guards and the two the two men were separated and sent he honored civilities so around the same because they didn't want them to be feeding themselves so they they did it that way he told the prison guards that and the two men were separated and sent

to other facilities were hard West uh and he um in the middle of the states and he wanted to be away from it the other person three days later Shaker with sound saf to death in a new cell in a long heart he had been killed by a fellow enemy did simply alive 53 doing this attack added to his um so many years your gallons very very very and a couple of us around him and we ask them how to get the question yeah we're doing this and all of that and he wouldn't tell us anything so we have to figure that some of us could have been a big problem uh the his neighbor

who was last seen in Fort Lauderdale with Schaefer this is Louis Halen she was a primary Acceptance in her disappearance she was at her job in connection with their case it remains in his selfish and she was very she was identified in the year 2004. another round he was harmed and halleck who was never who was founded bound and her gold filled teeth were around um also Melinda Hutchins was 22 years old waitress in 1973 the search of forest Chambers Hall um shakers lover they put it they looked around to find all kinds of things and and at this point they saw books containing the name the names phone number in in the books and

no other choice of conscience was found in the charges were at five so we don't know where he put it or after explained to have more unemployment that he had been framed and all those appeals were rejected Gerard and this is the sort of the end here um yeah Schaefer was born in as Mary said in March 25 in Wisconsin died December 3rd 1995 at 49 years old when he died he was held in prison at Avon Park in the ocean part of the state the person was located on the side of safe yes for the city a lot of memories that he was linked to 30 missing women and girls and we even know

from other things that other places that he probably was um have done a moral in that and um that's a basic sort of shaper and all the different things that happened in the early years because Shafer did what he wanted to do and yeah that's it yes to have a chance to um now that you've got them all brightened up I thought I thought you would like to see the picture of the things I don't see it in person it's not that far away that's true but he was the one that was probably yes I know that the Adrian's program so far is such a real good mood okay Schaefer was a classic yeah killer

fantasies but my head has radicals Association but some of these things is the behavior disease exists uh this is very similar to the number again Hills um Eva not someone we had to mentioned John Walsh in case another crying and never I was sailing the the credit down lost as the cases have been around the heavens we've charged himself but uh someone ended up did you investigate that is until the death of a clear because uh but we know and Joe Matthews retired that investigator and brought the ace to examine and when you go to the tools like many Associates part of the body is being one of the third pages these little things that

John lost being able to get an investigation got the pressure on them is what the killer had done he wanted to give another terrible these people are there's a lot of confusion in the side of the case things are going this way that way in circles and uh Adrian did a good job of getting the most of it together but there are some things that that she can't because I knew couldn't uh if she wasn't there was somebody of course and I didn't have a any Fortress of being involved in some other for example when uh Shaker and met the two girls these are the ones that got away from an ultimately last Saturday okay

pretty arranged with the girl because she knew she said his wife was going back before an automatic all that Saturday for a dental appointment and he even had a good morning to himself him up and uh when he went back yeah whatever he was going to do when he theorized a number of theories but one of them is and he went back to wherever he had tied from in the woods to kill him or take pictures of him before he could and of course that number of materialized I said no assumption and uh the the girls got away from it he had it when he got back to him what did it what had happened

they were struggling trying to get loose they were pretty little time they wanted to attending one tier her hands to her back uh the one whose hands were tied behind her actually ventured into the river 20. I don't know what we're doing and the fellow who saw her went to help her and bring her out of the river was an individual an elderly school teacher he has a school named after him Felix Williams and uh you're fishing all the time and that's where she was trying to walk out and uh so uh because the girl just gotten away he knew he was saying he caught now because where they were so I'm about to I

told him I told Shaker to come to the station and to report to the lieutenant on the and um so we did that the tunnel I'm sorry on the 191 every so longer yes there's a weird law enforce that hit himself calling the story and I went out make sure that the girls running out of the water she was we got her settled in the rest of some blankets for her toe gun water down to the decision it's not let her be exposed to him and we started getting destroyed yeah I think it's certainly stories skins just fake yeah themselves but if this is a result of when the girl okay assigned one of those

objectives to give certain amount of learning again her silence and lined up enough so when I got there and talking over there after talking it was placed on the regress Just Fish and uh it was washed it used to living in jail you let him sit for a while till again ready intelligently terribly and that's what it was then we got the girl and the victim to the office it's warm dry quarters together clothing never settle down and later the other the second one had gotten was shingles that I think we're all in the destiny and getting some clothing lashes settled down and then the the executives went along the decisions and putting it in

the race to the Lord so it could be used charges King which is here um the the other girl did not get in the river person and uh so then the detective is um but it was animal collection the thought that it was arrested and ultimately and uh uh Melissa if there's any satisfaction s it was um the stories have been exaggerated standard all over the place she wants three stories that are not that one he is beautiful you finish these people who were involved in the circus was fell um and this the investigation went on water where he was the process more and more here came down and somehow to to Orange but a

lot of Investigation for all these songs conducted yes but this smarter honor local history we always have people here are willingness research respect to suddenly disciples whatever you don't know because so many people that are guarded world terror out there stand the fall hour children of the place and yeah do you have any questions yes I have a couple of the most important line you know I saw the documentary that they did on television that long ago which is what made me aware I've been here for 22 years but never knew about this um and the thing that I was most intrigued by was the lack of sharing of information between police departments Ryder is

that accurate or was that an accurate depiction that the mothers had to come up to Martin County because I'm just thinking about what we have now with our Resources with the internet and how that information can be shared was that a real hold up in him being caught earlier no no we had it you had it but the second pair of girls uh hey yeah so what happened with the girls parents has read about Shafer and got some other information off the news earlier case in 2017 my husband called the place hilarities and uh become obviously so there's a lot of times foreign had evidence or something put in a selected late yeah forward Schaefer's

character while you were interrogate was he upset well well he knew he had been caught he was trying to come up with the holidays and things to explain his way out of it but when he thought he had a little worm and it became so sarcastic he was a typical associate that is right he lost a police officer in the Broward area Navy really and um he didn't know anything about this story so that's why I'm laughing he uh it was in any area and he said uh so it was a new story that that hey Jim maybe I can add a little to the story I've been around Martin County for 60 years so

I was when this happened and I happened to be up in the Ocala area and two young ladies were missing up there I got a hold of the police department and I said to them we're having cases like that in Martin County I recommend you tell that detective to get a hold of Martin County well that's the last I heard that they probably figured I'm some crackpot calling in but years later I see where the detective is retiring and in the article he said the two girls case never got solved that had bothered him I call the Ocala Police Department again and I said I don't know whether the detective ever got this I called

it in years ago I said you need to talk to Martin County they've had cases like this well sure enough they must have got a hold of it I never heard any more from them but the next thing I saw in our local papers that the people from Ocala closed that case that they prove Schaefer was the ones who got those two gals up in the Ocala area yes obvious suspective case for a number here here and they just it wasn't enough connectors charging but that was a good um we were looking at that case uh back uh long before Shaffer was but you don't mean you don't broadcast enough when you're working on cases

let out to the public because can you jeopardize yeah they belong to one time so they still alive it's getting through here in Martin County now that's the first thing but it's still a lot of the park that uh yes um based on the numbers we've seen you know Bob Stone said it was as many as 34 the dark shaper later on his intersection killed as many as a hundred and where do you feel that he really you know as many as victims do you feel that he was an exaggerator and a husband's ridiculous part of the personality maker exaggerated Glory but he couldn't I wouldn't I mean if somebody said um you know I

wouldn't have happened tonight questions wow a lot of times here that you're a good investigators the colonization and then there's a motion uh foreign his house so there's so many cases that he is linked to but now we are perfect it would be an old case um he didn't bury any bodies in one County did he he always went well there are personal bodies um their certain gearbox anything equipment there's a lot of bodies out there completely in southern model city of the new show in St Lucie County Canal out there right next to where the devil tree oh and it had done probably in the water for a couple of years before we knew

about the devil period and uh could very well be there have you been there okay me too it's so close it's kind of yeah would you want to go there well with DNA stuff today do they are they trying to like identify them oh yeah yeah okay I'm curious ly we have no Communications pretty names well if everybody was getting the same test and it made it a lot simpler but back when he was looking for a job foreign tests for methods she including all around psychological testing which they are not doing I think he's open credentials to a little manner for example it's true because I guess that's what I would say a little

bit very important and they didn't sold over any alarms and sometimes would expect to do something a little bit but but he was trying this season and officers and that big thing somehow I mean that's what you hear about before we came to Market ing yes no he's hired in Wilson marriage and he worked there and about the worst thing that anyone who would work this interview traffic investigation contagious what's the same appropriate you know that but this should be earmarks that you look further into this but in 1970 s careers foreign people who were co-workers of kids that were like you know what I knew that was something off about him well there are

people who knows things about him and we are able to let us thinking about everybody yeah there was nothing alarming that about you foreign apologize associated a few days before the best of certainly happened he told me what he thought and I agree with him complet Ely fine did he have a father and did he have siblings that exhibited any of this type of behavior I don't know why any other foreign by saying that I'm sure regards to say about but anyway saying that um 23 years or yeah you know uh sure thing but his wife does still live in the area and she is however the community and have been for a long time

but I don't know anything in all of the research I did I didn't say anything about my sister or I don't know about the mother computer she should be good yeah well um when this happened and Joe the Dog Shapers Mr Coleman Stewart News every New Year's Day the whole time I'm working to tell me if he said who was the managing editor that he was innocent that Elton uh did all this and and like breaking or whatever so he could bury his wife but he called the students every every year I saw a video oh yeah yeah he would go over here he uh did a lot of things education of young people and

Teresa and his wife I wouldn't know anything negative hi exciting well how did it feel when it was all said and done to know that you could work side by side with one of America's most prolifics here in England how did that sit on you well I didn't know foreign side by side with somebody like that who's a notorious figure in America history what is that one thing that I think that's right oh oh yeah so you didn't have this long-term relationship with him yeah but and WSU three and and the push some good news wow keep everything he was one killed and he was the best programs uh Elton shorts foreign um Shaffer never

bothered any children that we know of I don't know I think that would be awesome not in Martin County they were down in Papa York was found in the house from where they had a box you went to the house and enjoying the investigators from the state attorney's office and there were a couple of investigators on Bernard and Sheriff's Office who were assisting with that ends of negotiation okay so the girls DJ got untied from the trees right did the one help untie the other one of course you took off they were obviously I was wondering why didn't you help me otherwise yeah Baltimore County she said and I don't remember anyone telling us about

that I mean do you remember I don't remember hearing that matters foreign oh yes you want to be sure about smoking we have to have to out of here by 8 30 and so she can leave the truck and the kind of clothes you all have 15 minutes to talk and that way okay thank you so much
