out in the student news she is a famous genealogist she either won a prize a national prize in a publication so I will take this opportunity to thank you Alice for all that you have done with the history of Martin County and I also want to give a special thanks to her Mentor Sandra Thurlow both of you ladies have done wonderful things to make me appreciate Stuart I was born and raised here I know my mother was also born and raised here and mother used to say that Stuart in her time was a sand spur patch and you can light a candy downtown it wouldn't bother anybody nobody knew about it and when I was

growing up here in the 50s I'm still very young of course we were growing up here Stuart it was not exciting but then again when I think back about it it was exciting it was a great place to grow up in just didn't appreciate it if you wanted to get a pizza you had to go to West Palm Beach we could go to four Bob's but it had a farm and one time I did go in there and they asked to see my ID but that's another story and then if you wanted to see the latest movie you didn't want to wait for it to come to the lyric eight or ten months you go

to West Palm Beach it was a matter of choices but again we thank you for giving me an appreciation of Martin County so I want to say that Alice you are famous and I I want to say also that in the Bible in the Book of Proverbs it says a good name is more valuable than silver and gold and I did a research on your name Alice your name you have a good name it means to be Noble or of the nobility see many cultures have great importance on how they name their children if you are named Michael it means you are a gift of God if you are named Ruth you are a friend

and a companion if you are named Naomi you are Pleasant and on and on and on so Alice I found out some more things about your name your parents named you correctly it's almost like they could see into the future you are powerful and complete you are good intellectually and require several outlets for your energies you are bold independent inquisitive and interested in research you know what you want and why you want it you were creating outgoing and always looking for an opportunity to turn your ability especially before you were very flexible would like to be able to appreciated you like to talk and can easily relate to different cultures and Concepts you understand your

goals you can make major decisions in life you're going to worry or uncertainty and are able to achieve Great Heights to sum it all up Alice you are valuable thank you Joe Marie a treasurer of Stuart definitely um I always refer to her and of course a lot of the pictures that you're going to be seeing that were in the book are also from her family collection so we wouldn't have a lot of those that hadn't been for the various descendants of our Pioneers here you know lending these photos so I could scan them and use them in this book and I still have a lot of extra ones by the way with my name

Joe Marie I was named for my mother's cousin and she was named for her grandmother so it does go in the family in fact it was Alex Luis everybody had the same person but what I'm going to present to you tonight are uh as you see here the collection of photos that I put some of these in the book but I had so many that I you know kept a lot aside and use them for programs like this so in the book itself those who've gotten the book you'll see there's roughly 200 photos now some of those photos are even what's known as stitched together which means I put two similar related photos together and

stitched them guess what Arcadia publishing I've never heard of that before and I was the one and submitted the idea and said you know this will give me more pictures of different pictures and they approved it because it's still one image even though I stitched two together so many pictures and some of these images uh didn't make the cut obviously for the flow but that's why I saved a lot of them for this program okay um as you can see some of this started with the trade notes obviously uh well the pitching straight post this is before we had a little train coming in here before training Bridge supplies people who headed this area that

these others were here on the trade books it came up of course the Indian River being found into the Saint Lucie and one of the first early places that was established 1901 is our own Steward Heritage it wouldn't be that then sort of 1901 and this pictures from 1902 of the North Park school so as you can see a very very similar to what we still see today um Frazier family was one of the early pioneers and that's one thing I tried to focus on in the book too is some of the families even though this picture is not in the book that's why I say some of these pictures for our presentation but there's

a household of the family members probably about 1900. and here's our own St Lucie River families enjoying the water very common to do not just for fishing and boating the stretch to see in the background that is the um yeah that is the railroad bridge so across whenever that came in uh 1895 1894 and there's one of our early schools that served the school from 1909 to 1923 when they did build another school father down but we call now the high school was leading the instructional Center this is the early one we would later serve them as part of the courthouse too um this whole area where that is before we get into the courthouse

today um and they built this in 1901 it's so funny they thought oh my gosh you're building this thing up yeah now in uh more Intel in the Pottstown neighborhood we had the Christian Endeavor hall there's a small young infused by many different groups including later by the Women's Club and this job is from roughly 1910. in that same neighborhood of Potsdam neighborhood that's around um Second Avenue Third Street Albany that's a very we're talking about possum this was the Methodist Church that served from 1907 to notice January 1st 1960. that's because it converted to the ground on January foreign neighborhood and a lot of buildings including this fine Church went to the ground here's

one of the streets about San neighborhood which is originally made me have a UTV and we now know it as all these streets so probably shot like made of the year in 1910s now along those streets both Avenue A Avenue b m c f e d e so creative related here's another shot of the railroad roughly the 1910s now it looks like you're saying regular friendships with a train to go over not the parts we didn't get until 1918 a bridge across the saint was supercars to jail that doesn't mean they didn't try it once in a while would be very great people on bicycles went across the people who walked across them there wasn't

too many places to go other than you know going to the river into green blood cell here we have one of our early hotels the Stewart Hotel this is the early 1910s on Bergstrom we actually started before in the city this is the main part of the original part of the hotel and then these editions were added off and this would be known as the Stuart Hotel so we had that for many that's one of our early ones uh also our first bank very nice shot in our first Grand Theater 1912 and that was built right along St Lucie Avenue that would later be much much like your other businesses but probably more recent times

we've remembered is the fellowship hall the horses sound exactly the same building because unfortunately this building had a fire in the mid 1980s but luckily they had plans and they totally rebuilt this like it was so that is what it originally looked like in 1912. um also right across from there and it's hard to imagine that sometimes but this is where the hotel St Lucie also known as a Saint Lucie Hotel it was built in 1913 right along the St Lucie Avenue the studio River in the right-hand side very impressive Hotel uh very popular everybody wanted to go there and what's in that area today is parking lot but unfortunately we lost the hotel it

was torn down uh 1913 we see a horse could have been already going on for a long time fishing had always been very popular and here you see the ladies are just as involved as the guys and Bishop so there's a big catch to see there on the right and right out of the river so applications one of our early Pioneers or early settlers here was Harry James also he wasn't right in town he was involved in a lot of things in town but his uh area the property you know was more on tropical Farms area and he was one that started Citrus troops not the first couple of other people did this history that's

what he didn't grow the pineapples and there you see one of his daughters there on the left and that's scary daughters right along the same because a lot of people don't compose along the river there I just want to hear his other daughters and now here's that same church we just mentioned remember about the fire just another view and I want to show you both of those views this is the one that does burn in that fire January 1st huge there's the inside of that Church march 1914. you don't have very many pictures it's hard to find up inside some places there's many a time I'm a glove I had a child he just had

to wear it before Goodman Hall that dead days and decades ago but this is one from Joe Marie's collection that we have and you already know the night shot showing the passenger train depot now the parole buildings on the left that's that same one that's green around the corner um Flagler Avenue in St Lucie this was the field in 1913 when this shot is 1914 2013. now we did have a passenger uh people closer towards the other end of you know where the Riverside is with Bridges but this one was built in they needed something bigger that served for decades one of the other popular places in town 1914 was the Coventry Hotel very nice

everybody loved his Coventry family and foreign right there that's it it was actually three letters this was built by the Hancock family and that's 1914 they stood outgrew it the next time we then eventually have a second and third lyric here's some of the other uh Pioneer Ladies as you can see we have name there this is the dire family here in 1915. it's great to see what the families look like with how they dressed through certain times now this particular building is the McDonald building this is before the fire and this is the drugstore there's the gentleman one right there in front 1915 and the fire is insisting that that building would be addicted

to the fire also so not just their business but their house but they reach out to you yeah besides all the other kinds of fishing did we go out not only the Indian River into the ocean to bring in some big caches here you can see this from 1960s but notice the gentleman Wayne's dress I mean you know you're closing you're going to pose nicely in your escr doesn't mean fish with them foreign review same place here's another shot of Jack and Dr yurich's son February 1960. so all these young men were going to be part of the special ceremony for the dedication of the new Blackboard School and the girls they look forward to

seem to see sometimes a background because this is the school is not here so that's what you see in the background as far as how many buildings or structures were around and there's Barry McDonald and daughter of Jamie McDonald and there's train station as big as April 1960 and the Perot building and of course that train station was torn down in 1969 because we didn't have passenger trains anymore and no one could really work out how to stay at the building a fortune I think today we could come up with some creative ideas in the 60s and 50s so what we have there now is just empty randomness of tracks now I call this an

early sale this is Larry McDonald and there's your ticket that you're in reflecting off the mirror so I'd say that's early so she didn't know here's another show that hotel St Lucie 1970. remember his middle 13 and this was from the side of St Lucie area another one of uh Davis daughters Bessie and you can see there the structure right here that is the early field 1916 St Lucie River Yacht Club and this would be the social Center for a lot of people's food in the 1910s into the 20s so it would eventually enlarged what you see there is the original size is a developed because it's so popular here's Avenue D before that but

notice you know under dirt road you didn't find many places to pay it early on at all it has a good shot again 1910s showing Kimberly Apartments which was the original agency we were the band America and the Doubletree Hotel the coverage would also build apartments right next to the Coventry hotel for the right side so it's a nice shot of the two of those places and we had a flagpole I know it's hard time to believe but it was a liable right in the middle of the street here this is from Flagler what was under the railroad you're safe let's see over here here's the train station and that's a playful it's dedication to

1918. and it was up there for many years eventually I basically got enough cars this is one of my favorite shops too this is from the river looking back you've got the Saint Lucie Avenue along there and this is the shoreline this is an Annex that was built to this hotel St Lucie hotel and we said 1938 was built they found that by 16 they needed another you know expansion so instead of building onto the St Lucie they built this Annex so it's called The Saint Lucie Hotel Annex built there and that served up until about the 20s they needed really that dark area because they built a dog going out here and so the

building actually got moved over a block and that building today of course the aluminum different shape is now known as the Stuart boat house restaurant is there any other things during those years but this is the first time it's ever been a restaurant and that's the Stewart's boat house right there on Seminole in Saint Lucie Avenue Sports Mall Railroad Avenue and stand in between Flagler Arizona there's your uh parole building this is the second here right here and remember I said the first one was born by the Covenant and then they built the end up end of the second one a little more people this the second one is done these are other buildings here

one to see sanitary Market that's a grocery store foreign modeling but it's still it's a problem one of the other things buildings which still exists today is was originally Mark Frazier's home by her son and it's in 1920s right along U.S one is where this house exists it looks pretty close to the state uh belongs to Bangkok funeral home now so it needs a little work on it but uh this is the house originally back in Arizona yeah another one of my favorite shots this is looking as if you were looking towards uh George Park's store the railroad station there on the left St Lucie Avenue is this way right here that's lighter or what

would be Fairwood Avenue back then and this is a drugstore here sandbox drugstore and just just to see that shot again the dirt road he'll pay Megan really would go on to you know a few years later here's another favorite shot this is uh not just pineapples we've got vegetables and citrus trees and here someone has their family with the house in the background and growing crops vegetable oil the gasoline stations with more carbs you need a gasoline station and this one I believe was along Dixie Highway which we've been parallel with the railroad tracks you can see that uh you know everybody has your car eventually here's a great shot of the transition the

other way will be back towards the bridge and our passenger trained in the 20s and of course you've got the the road Billy back and from that side headed to a train station it was a popular place by the way people always checked who was coming who was going so when the trains came everybody gathered the stations he was coming off the train there's another shot of that second marriage and uh is your little bit impressive area of what it looked like but that makes move by the way when they yield the third one it actually gets moved over to Osceola all of it and the new one that we think of today of the

lyrics that's same spot now here's the newest school that our shows the other one from 1909 to 1923. this is the new one that opens up to our high school Avenue and East Ocean served all the grades and this is what opened up in September 1923 and this is the building that the school board did eventually used is What's called the instructional Center and now if you go inside that building there's no offices in there instructional Center all their offices were moved out other than small ones of the elementary school in front they said about the Superior in the main building so the thing is we've got to find someone who's interested in using that

building to preserve it and not help us come down it's another form of gas station also definitely along as you can see the repair tracks over there so this is Dixie Highway in the 20s service stations that's what they were you didn't have to do it somebody out there one thing we've had instructors in a lot of places in Florida auto camps and we had a couple other camps here this is shot at St Lucie Auto Camp also right along Dixie Highway and because we were so short of housing they were not an apartment there wasn't enough hotels there wasn't enough cottages and nothing so people came in their cars to pitched tests and they

all had small cabins some of these places and yet they also service stairs out of there so they would have a grocery store and they would have entertain them they had the laundry and some of them had restaurants so Auto canceled throughout Florida because it was such a blue in the 21 of people moving here it just wasn't enough billboards here's that expanded zeppeluci Yacht Club from Russia to the other shop with the girl almost a smaller and this is now doubles um by the 20 they built this now unfortunately this would also go tragically even though you see there's a nice balance out there in the St Lucie River uh we had a hurricane

uh 28 come through and it was a niece's happiness Jen was not rebuilt so it really had a short line probably from 1916 1918 to the late 20s um this is known as The View oscillo building you know what this building is it's uh the restaurant Mulligans today it wasn't actually very happy for them it has been loads of different restaurants it's been amazing it's been a dinosaur it's been everything practically and right there on the corner this is how it started off it was a Vegas to event Superman was originally across the street where we think of the fellowship hall today and then when this was built in 21 they moved over there and

a lot of people you know they remember about the Ashley Yang Robert and the Stuart Bay well yes they brought them twice once in 1915 in its location where the fellowship hall is and then after they moved next door across the street then they wrote this one too so they did not discrimination because disability yeah do you say County Commissioner sir okay a lot of things established here in the area and this bridge going across the river very close again downtown response is free to actually if you take that 76 it's on your left before you get to 95. and it was named the Gaines Bridge also known as a humpback bridge and cars that

travel a lot of places you can't travel right now you can walk across the headphones here's the more Harkin store our long Flagler the lyric is on the right and again this is 24 to 1930 that this establishment selling groceries was there and that's the market rate here's another vaccine that you can tell of uh at same street in St Lucie there's a few building there's the uh Annex that I talked about Saint Lucie hotels before it gets moved and there of course we have um we've had a lot of things in this field building um post office drug stores insurance companies a little of everything and then there's that thing now over here that's

actually a park you can't see it all there's a part for many many years across skin here's another shot of that there's a thank you see our Auto Camp another shot of it and again they've tried to meet the needs of all the residents that stated they were camping they had their own tent or they're going to prevent the cottage you know they were they were helping them now come January 1926 we are celebrating becoming mark down remember before we were part of Palm Beach California before that when they go but we finally with the help of this Governor John Barton named the county acronym and we've been celebrating the January where we figured almost

everybody in the year um we had a great big parade as you can see lots of Celebration lots of people who are all over and I'm just are married from neighboring County Escape now this is the literature you have a Stanwood the lyrics have finished yet it wouldn't finish until March and open it up and then see this little section up there up above it that's a penthouse a lyric at a penthouse and this is the roaring 20 party party party after a joke they had a burning after after the show so they really made use of this once the lyric opened up and all that would change yeah that's September 1928 storm didn't damage

totally delivered but it definitely took off the penthouse exactly and the rest was blocked so when that storm came across that fantastic at all family said ah I don't think we'll do it again so we've never been okay here's another shuttle parade and we've got the Stanley kitchen and at his store this is the department store right there and you're heading down um Redwood Avenue replica so and the critical the builder of the lyric filled with many buildings this is representing the young that war that he was working on this is his float a lot of people a lot of businesses and neighborhoods put their own float in the parade there in January and this

is very long enough foreign ER quote not a good shot showing the um uh itching department store eventually I guess would hold that and it would become known as the steward the department store partnership now to show you how much newer people really enjoy their area they didn't have to go they'd find wherever they could which is usually only maybe a mile away they go out to the woods and have a big and they also have picnics along the rivers at the beach but this particular family as you can see there's a lane family Coventry family the roof family that's my husband's family Crews did that and they're just eat it without the tree joining

them when you bring your own cookout we just have a good time out there now this is the ice plant that we have we had several different types of ice factory this was the stereophized plant right along the railroad tracks right along Flagler uh think of where the water towers are today at Water Tower and it's very close to where that left that you can see in the water shower that's the old one right there and the new one is in your body they actually have both of them now because of the 20s and all the people coming here things were moving not only buildings being built now but also grows to be cleared and

constructed so Road clearing and construction would be very complex is another good shot figuring out the roads are in 26. and again things were being built everywhere this is on the other side of the railroad tracks They look where you've got uh Flagler you got the railroad tracks then Dixie Highway this is right along there some of the hotel some shops some cafes that we find along Dixie Highway garages but things were expanding and then we had Bert burger and you will be junior Captain Logan was his father but this will be also involved in uh flying plans and this is a City Club Stadium right off of the St Lucie River and Mayor John

Taylor said he was married at this time of 28 this is right along um set up there right in the background and he's able to switch this building was originally the uh Dixie Cafe it was for years and it's also right along the Dixie Highway and when uh the family being loved doing therapy moved to another place to do the restaurant uh this was taken over by manager and his office supplies that he had for a few years that's in the 30th was the district I think it was in the 20s now this shot again does not exist anywhere else you can't find this anymore this was back in the 30s um this was what

was like a perfect thing but today this is closer towards the future core you've got to go the other way past the lyric and uh you've got where this bark was there's a Bandstand there's a Bandstand up there Osceola is over here and this would be like so people would come out yeah picnics there or any speeches be given now remember we said about that same buildings and the few building and it was a bank it used to be a lot of different things this is the same new building possibility and it was during the 30s the Great Atlantic Pacific Tea Company and most of the customers that are there that came quite frequently said

hello ladies yes and that's not just during that time neighborhood had been known to come Steward or a lot of the supplies they needed for decades so it's nothing new here's some of the fellas that worked at the AP go to their groceries you see the drop and uh the other um that's one disadvantage of them have not been able to get all of them yeah there's the shadow lawn Apartments uh Albany and US-1 very close to the George Thomas house um it's later it was the Lee Apartments also went on it originally started by George Thomas he had a field known as The Shadow law or those apartments are still there today 27 still

going strong today near Georgia along U.S very modernistic looking compared to some other you know garages of himself in the 20s yeah the background over here is my Methodist church is by the way and over here in the background will be at the George Thomas House Sunrise Apartments along Camden Avenue the 30s it's building 27th that still exists still a nice uh design inside of those apartments we've been able to Showcase them in the Years with our home tours uh chisholm's restaurant in US Squad very famous place a lot of people like that was there for many many years and they also served the lessons the lessons we do to stop the native past years

and they get fed there at a very quick time so chooses I believe for the local people for visitors and for those whoever in the buses or cars yeah eventually choose has to come down this is the number of early 1960s because in 64 a wider US-1 it was developed so a lot of those visits includes visitors there's the fellowship hall that we pick up today but again it started the bank and in the 30s we had a city hall for the city Steward fire department and the police to Earth are there and this is the Bell so if they needed those pyramid volunteers they read the Bell they knew what happened the hospital and

we first had the sanatorium still upon but then they knew that that could only take your emergencies and bursts they need something to be in a lot more cases so this was built uh opened up in March of 1939 the mark Penny hospital now Martin Memorial Hospital modern house systems you know the different names that it's had over the years this is early duties and he still has benefited to take to this very day and it looks very much like that so if you've never noticed it when you're trying not to be able to go through that people lose the same here uh an aerial shot I concentration a lot of people remember this over

the years this is um north of the Roosevelt bridge and unfortunately it was lost during the 50s because it got struck by lightning one time with another fire so that uh I'm a second firing it was pretty much done with contemption control now it was very popular here we have Osceola we're looking into 40s now and it's looking towards um is if you're looking towards any circle of that section down there this is St Lucie and Osceola intersection a lot of you are starting to remember this section now yeah and here it was originally the albino right along High School Avenue and 4th Street or East Ocean and a greater was named the abandoned Court

Apartments was after many years it was because the owners of yelled at were you know also is an impression and 30 percent in the company going right now is that Jacksonville and they named it the Atlantic Port Apartments there's another great shot down and there the landing cord looking in through impressive kind of spot out there here's also Osceola looking the other ways it can go back towards uh Citizens Bank and joining the circle looking at that place you see not everything is built up in the late boards later and the Pelican touched down to take back of course the 26 that shot between the 40s and right at Florida Avenue and Osceola now it

looks a little bit different today because uh Derek Willie Gary has owned it since the executives in the area in the early 80s and he said some removing changing but this will give you an idea of part of it there's more of it that way you go back to facing off of the river too it served as one of the earliest nursing homes you know for the element in Stuart and that was in the tickets so students had a lot of different things and members of an eight Circle closed Women's Club had a wonderful idea in 1949 instead of the palm trees that have been there they had heard about the Statue it's up in

storage in New York and it was supposed to be part of the World's Fair uh earlier in the late 30s and never really got an exhibit and they thought oh gosh this would be great now Michael I never saw it you know they just heard about it and so they paid the storage on it hadn't shut down and when they saw that it was grapes and semi-nude women with this one so they decided let's put it in the park so that is where they're dedicating it right there and going up near the courthouse and it'll go to other places within a Memorial Park later on before it eventually in the mid-1990s it's moved to pain

circles you know today that's what happened Joe Marie has a few stories on that one don't you joking yeah she tells the stories of when they were kids were a lot of things right here's Osceola what's up with the businesses uh the Home Building there on the left the two-story we have our video photographer his office yeah so he's a great chef everything happening downtown and Citizens Bank which moved in there in the late 30s or the survey area that were in the fellowship hall but then they built this new building around the performance faces in each circle and was there for many years until the mission goes to us one in Colorado and but

this was originally the peacock okay built in 26 but it's been a lot of other things over the years and if you see 54 in the traffic they're eventually buying uh it's known as the condo hotel and unfortunately it suffered a major fire January 1959 and so there was an awesome Monument there really this is that department store I'll talk about before which is in a secure Department and uh Dr Parker there's a lot of people who owned are for babies and all this is his office on Fourth Street in aristocia and this is in the early 50s I'm sure a lot of people remember that and this is Joe Marie's office early on 1957.

their family set this up and they're still in that same location to this day they're facing that new roundabout with one of the statues word statues that are going in there we'll have a fountain but they build up their 57 and a lot of people said when they built that visit state of the Lord she is feeling normal to bridge she goes back into the 20s The Whiting family had a garage after many years later becomes a radiator shop and she died upstairs particularly is a dentist office has that at the dentist office I like that green person so as I said many thanks to many of the different descendants of the long time Pioneer

residency restored who helped donate these collections that we got Stan uh luckily could use everything in the book that I still have to share with everybody thank you any questions I've got to say earlier Carol Stout I want to thank you she brought me a check tonight the first check for the because the plywood the city put on there for the hurricane if it had been a little bit more wind we'd been in terrible shape so we are now having accordion shutters and she gave us a donation I want to thank you okay any questions all yeah so again those who haven't gotten the book it's available over there um Barbara tonette can help you

on that so thank you everybody
