Iron

Cast Iron Iron (1800’s)

This well-worn cast iron flat iron speaks to the labor of housekeeping in Stuart's early years, when keeping a home meant heating irons on wood stoves and pressing every garment by hand.

About this object

Made to last through decades of use, such irons were essential tools in households throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, their weight and heat-retaining properties making them reliable partners in the endless work of maintaining a family's appearance. Donated by longtime community members Rick and Evelyn Kottler, this humble artifact reminds us of the patience and strength required of those who built Stuart's homes and daily life.
