Scale

Shop Scale late 1800’s

This brass market scale represents the honest commerce that built Stuart's early economy, when local shopkeepers weighed everything from fresh pineapples to seafood catches with careful precision.

About this object

Used in late-19th-century general stores and markets, such scales were essential tools of trade during the era when the Florida East Coast Railway first connected Stuart to the outside world, transforming it from a frontier settlement into a growing commercial hub. The generosity of Rick and Evelyn Kottler in preserving this piece allows us to touch the very instruments that made early Stuart's shops function, a tangible reminder of the merchants and communities that laid this town's foundation.
