The story in brief
Although this grand vision ultimately collapsed due to severe economic crashes and transportation gridlocks, subsequent generations of residents worked passionately to preserve the town's charming, small-town identity.

I have many of our board members here tonight let's see uh Tony our person our God is for everything uh well some of my other board members stand up Suzanne's not here she's the director Alice is here she's the corresponding secretary Barbara is here and she's worried about oh she said nothing Barbara is being recording secretary and then I have the best of the very best these girls were at the Museum they use the jobs that we should be paying people to do but we've got Gloria Henry like Linda Britton jonette and Henry and I know there's somebody else you'll raise your hand on this ship Judy Woods oh my God I can't forget Judy
Judy is the story we loved by all of us is fighting cancer and we are so glad to see you tonight thank you please find us that he's not a board member all right I'm going to turn it over to um hello everyone my parents who holds town in 1952. I started school in the Drew school house there and go follows um Olivia I guess it would be called and um there were two of us in first Friday boy um and when I came back I realized there was nothing there was no history there was nothing that old man was sadly so when I came up with the idea it was starting to be a
very small book and that I started Gathering things up and I knew who to talk to ten years but um suppose that started it was just a sleepy little town and we're likely we packed it that way but the history of Florida goes way way back now this is too loud yeah but this is one of the old map which is very very interesting I believe then this actually shows that this goes back to life the 1800s but it was referred to from the 90 miles of Coastline they referred to it as mosquito the girl from from Jupiter the Jupiter North Dakota was referred to as mosquitoes together zero Lagoon but and then on the
old truth charts which is really interesting it was always referred to along probably pretty much dancing the whole sound because it always looked like the White Sands of the sailors could see it as they sailed along the coast and it was referred to as the Bleak shards and that was because this is one of the first pictures and this is about 1885 and it is a superhero so this is the intercostal Waterway and this is right there with windy um the river was the main travel everything was longer um all the traffic the transportation there were no roads basically in Florida so if you wanted to get any questions that were traveling in the 17th
and 1800s and they would pick up um your produce whatever department and uh everything so everything will be shipped north um on these inches the sea Ship Happens cater to the Arabs that were there and goes down because it was a very very windy to the care of the ship as it would be winding through those and it was very very shallow about 18 inches deep in some places and so navigation was very very difficult particle sound is you would go through cameras big kind of like an opening the river got larger and everybody okay this is a good place to live but um so foreign acres for eight thousand dollars uh the following year
um sold 4 000 acres for four thousand dollars not a bad gift s friends which um existed that that area In 1855 before the chest the results of sandwiches that would go from way over the distributor saw the same supplies to all the people that live along the river one of the things that they would use also is they would have to cut their brains that lover and everything to supply the riverboats which was the way of making money foreign Booker who was a family that goes back to that area and in 1887 his family he was eight years old and they moved from Waverly to Hometown on a sailing Road and they moved there
and there was only three families that lived in Ozone at that time moved into but um the house just happened to be sitting right where I wanted to build around so they picked up the house and um then eventually they go to the new house but he talked about all this um circled around the house and shot the turkeys first school housing homes around was built in 1895 and it was one group and it exists along the railroad track close to where Jacob's landscape built in his back I think in the 1880s there were a group of people that came over from England and they were known as religion sand the Hato staffy farm and
to just have a different light start from so that's where the pineapple fields and so much of the farm and everything everything was pretty much covered on Dr Davidson State Park all the way through Hometown for all teams there was a man named a tiny heart and he had bars on both sides of the river and he would swim the seals across the river to the to the fields over there Acres 3 000 countries in England um the firstborn would be would take care of the castle they say whatever they have the second one would be to take our employee for me the third sign would joining the church my family got to the board
of day six they had better life but they all came for various families foreign England they in England the Woolen Hills and everything were being very successful and they have a lot of money and they needed to invest it so they're coming to America to find ways to investing a lot of investment in theater Central uh the Citrus farms uh foreign of I'll order it to any one of them they purchased River Apartments association association the worst thing that happened in 1898 was the big Breeze for the harassing icicles hanging off the water tower and the stands on the top of the hill and um and um so they were crazy about each other and
so this is Henry Stokes into an end and started running rooms 1916 the North Bridge was built that was um right there pretty sure I'm going across was the swing Bridge so that would open up to her Island where you could actually drive over the roads were terrible at that time my neighbors went Indian jewelry Association first um bought and invested in the area Jupiter Island was called folks down east um and a lot of the people I do here I was still they don't save you around they say oh Sam next time I'm a little secret male um the first person to build over on Jupiter Island was Charles Jackson he was from Daytona
and they were fishing camps and they were more to the South Jupiter Island and Captain armor okay Arthur which was bigger lighthouse's famous happy that everybody knows his name he also goes to his home in that area also we have a long up here at the into the river or his house and so his wife ended up being the first family were there one of the first families a house uh farther north was in 1893 and that was an Eight's family this family was happy very wealthy I tried to go back from Rochester New York and I'm trying to get the information on them but they um they literally when they built their house they
filled all the lumber and everything across they just loaded the wood or everything across the river the day we come South on their own trademark parking on one of the side rails while they were here for the winter and then they would um somebody got ready to go to work foreign River Association and he was brought over to figure out what to do with the property and how to um make money and Investments and that's when he decided he borrowed twelve thousand dollars don't uh he called it the items in there were three Cottages within two years to pay all the money back so he was very successful again helping the the association because they
didn't didn't want to lose money I talked about um Mrs Stokes that built her um carry their house into a rooting Saran Saran for an end but then there was a hotel that was built on top of the water through the water Cavalry sand doesn't look anything this little child was built and um foreign they have different uh buildings for the kitchen and the dining room one of the interesting stories is they always talk about those lived in the area for quite a while we have a place and show up and Mrs Brown would say he smells so bad he just felt terrible and he would wrap all these flunks and everything around his body
he always break himself himself and the guest love it because he was interesting and so he said he would be there at them hides and feathers and everything that he would um forever and sell them come back hang out and then it was like you just did the voice again you know everybody whenever he yeah thank you God goes down that are kind of interesting and what's really interesting a lot of it is has not changed this was the mainstream back in the 40s or 50s there was a second floor this is where Taste Restaurant is now and this was staying under storage but at first it was just Taste Restaurant today's restaurants have a
second floor but in the 33 hurricane that was um destroyed outside them foreign so the second floor is remember back on what is trending neat little building but you still look like part of the development with the Indian River Association was um making it a place where they could stop poverty so they created their own water company um Power Plant and this was actually the original picture back in like 1920s and these had big generators and engines in there that they offer power for Hometown foreign thank you this is the plaque this is the flat up close down back in 1920. the property was laid out with all the streets everything because um they were
hoping to really um starts on the property and get people to come to Florida just like USB and so the people they invested in some months more money they go okay let's make this um more enterprising so they bought more of the homeless Grant to the north of Bridge Road they changed the name from just Olympia who will live near future city Martin who was the governor at that time of Florida when you appreciate a year of C was writing for um mayor of Jackson and Jacksonville was very big into movies um silent movies saying he won he had a third grade education basically but people loved him so if you went on to write
about it when he became Governor he realized that he really did there was a lot of money to be made with the movies and maybe that was a big mistake so he kind of liked Barton County and that's where we got our name from governor and he promoted he's got scars to say it wrong um they silent picture of movies movie producer scars scared his sons are very dangerous you know all the sons now but he was being a disciples movies are on the way out so he made a deal with him to be the the whole person and for both electricity and they were going to build a movie full production movie movie production
companies everything here in Martin County a lot more uh towns and everything for it but they won and they paid him like five hundred thousand dollars what they know is he who the money is bad as they wanted him to be a substance so he was down in West Palm Beach um I apologize oh at a time while New York City was where they did all the all the movies slicing all the um finishing of the films and so basically New York to Florida it was much closer than California so that was the selling point and um they had the whole plot of the of the Fisher city was laid out by Washington DC it
was going to happen 12 miles long and five miles wide they had the um movie production um movie studios for through the design that was going life to the West was all plotted out through like bigger the city since ice cities there were going to be four train stations the monetary station which existed during both sound then there was going to be bone mass and there was going to be the main um how do you say the picture City where you have this very busy calf with all these train stations where the people were moving back and forth like New Yorkers thank you wide and we're going to give you Parks everywhere throughout the town
already for legislation reporting improved the application for the charter incorporation of the municipality um construction has started on the road over to the beach where the hotel would be or numerous things different sections of the town with a civilization what's amazing is the first week to be able to sell a sold 1.8 million dollars worth of property which is why and only three weeks into the project application was already made have been made for Christmas City State Bank um picture city was standing off the ground finally late October 25th the Roadster what happened in October 1925 all of a sudden from Jacksonville south the training Railroad clogged up nothing was coming down they were not
able to get supplies um transportation system to stop they couldn't even get food to come South and it was almost like the the trash the market crash that also the groundwork of being able to get supplies down in Florida and a lot of also put it in all the time and they explained said we're going to move to Florida and so a lot of people pulled out they um they are a contractor paid money to for the property and then you decide to take loss of the money so as fast as the development started that's how quick they stopped was just awkward so a lot of people lost a lot of money so folks I
went back to the sleepy little town again and every time something good would happen it was just a quiet game in 1937 the Reeds came out sound and they um yeah because the foresight in how Connecticut and other towns of New England had developed within the first within the first six months today first property was a home then they purchased um the club but then with their first sight whenever anything was happening so you're going to put that into um uh National Seashore which locks that which you're not going to go farther north um with the road um a lot of us one that's all um given to um underneath anymore so then they um
stay on the property but Mr degree um not an also invest don't make that property buys the property so this is kind of how it goes down has been the way it is and catch small and um there's so much playing donated probably out of time how am I doing videos this is actually a picture of Jupiter item back in the 30s and you can see this is the golf course the openness the lack of trees and now there's so many trees that you can't really see like you could back then to the property back in 40 seconds the local people would have every Wednesday our fish lovers over at the beach everybody would be
and this was the Dominion that they had before they had The Pavilions like we do now Jay Graham Park which is where we boat ramp everything but his father-in-law was William Moore he was a cpaper that traveled along the river and he saw his property and he made an investment grew up in Palm Beach Palm Beach when he was a little boy so he was out of water all the time and property's parents home and ended up being sold to um fire and um Royal Poinciana Hotel ended up being on their property where he was a little boy but then he had the property manual sound so they sold it during the 20s with any
I don't have it in my head right now but like a million dollars and whoever bought it because of the crash they moved to California or whatever well they went back on the purchase down and then he turned he ended up at the mango trees you know um and living there in Hobe Sound for the rest of his life this is actually the what Olympia or the first flag of Jose look like with the original streets and the river before um it was straightened out the Corp Engineers came in and straightened the river which was the Narrows as you go down the river you can see like the little um three Charities to go off
to the sides in different directions but that was the original room that was the pathway of your shoulders and the deployment years came in and straightened me a picture of the Train Station train station was this whose picture was taken in 1905 of the train station the preparing would have come through about probably about the most sound was about 1890. foreign this is truly beautiful yeah yeah this was uh this was actually in 1955 flyer you know if you come towards the weekend funeral school house we had a stage out on the front out on within one classroom which supported and I absolutely love who puts shows and everything on um the Lesser family who
had the the Lesser family who came to town in the black 19 20 25 I think um they built um foreign Church they first met here in the school house that she was the type of person that a machine the town she had presents for everybody she would do she started a winning slot she started getting everyone together she would have parties she would have Christmas parties for all the children the black children with white children all had presents that she would make sure that they had um but if she went North when she came back she had friends for everybody everyone absolutely loved her we talked about the Ashley again the action plan of
course was sharing those sound um the cemetery is in my marriage stands and that was where they were homeless is right there for the cemetery is now when when we actually came were killed um no Minister nobody would do the funeral for him and so this was like this is actually asked Mrs Lester and she would come to do the service and she grabbed her little black she had a little black bag and absolutely certain score so that was just the kind of people came on so very very much love so in the book there's a lot of pictures of them because they have these three days of cars it was like somebody said to
me right because men love cars and if you think you think about these parts that were here in 1920s and what sound was pretty cool you know so beautiful horse um any questions which is small pictures of a lot of what I talked about about other things in history which I try to just explain period of the day yes some of you are for sure that my mother as their home neck teacher uh Pauline MacArthur on Tuesdays she I think she started teaching me about um and he's 65. um and there were two Moab teachers and she ruled with an iron fist um mom and dad moved we moved from a mission in 1952 on
Dad's cell front and backside on Great Lakes and they blocked up the restaurant which is now marrying the Davis and uh we struggled yeah twice a day usually and go fishing and if he got too busy at the restaurant and he'd close up and go to the beach gracious you can't do this especially when Mom has told that he really did uh more often foreign west of case for A1A a lot of growth packages it's a little Jackson but it's a few blocks a little bit here but that's all the fire station and the older homes like stacked houses back in the 20s built with the idea of getting people to come to town to
invest to be able to know a reason for the insurance Club they bought up all the property which was part of the and they formed the Hub sounds um um it was not for sale unless you worked for her um yeah you might be able to buy one of the Lots or something he's a very very careful when she passed away in a department then they started selling the property because the grandchildren wanted money they wanted their class yes and Olympia were my recollection was true that was about where A1A crosses that is when they were planning for train stations um the picture City train station and I have a picture of it in uh
the book which shows it but it would have been where Oscar is and the design that I see where I look at the map and the layout it looks to me like they were planning a road going across the river at that point also to the beach ES this is actually the layout of picture City so this is a this is Bridge Road right here and this is Olympia which is like the old part of hope there's houses that exists now and the hotel that I talked about would have been on the hill right here so the center of town back in the 18 uh early 1900s would be like right in here and then
it went down more over so the train station the train station is right here or was the one that existed so then they have they kind of had to secure position so this is this is the way the streets were going to be designed going out and the light and and uh and it went all the way so this is a railroad track that runs along and this would be out this is like Frodo this is the proposed picture City this was going to be the main uh terminal of the picture City and it looks like if you see this it looks like there's a road that goes right across the river which would go
over to the beach and there and they just plotted out all the way to the north on the on the island train station here train station here that one and then there would have been another one up here and then uh and so like at the time us one did not even exist so US-1 basically because you're a fan of like if you did it the US one would be right in here so you can see how this was plotted out all the way to the west and it's going to be thin with their Nissan we all know that too I remember back in the 50s on piano guys when you drove into in there
it was all under water you would only get in Montana Gardens you would only get like to the first Little D in the road thing and everything else was flooded the rains were so bad that year I think we said it rained for 28 days straight and he stopped so yeah I keep waiting there's going to be people with uh a lot of water around their houses to any other questions yes just south of Taste Restaurant the one um so in case you're at the boils hurt like those this picture and you can see where it was just like like apple Taste Restaurant and then um stay in our grocery came in and they added
on to it and made it bigger and that was their first that was their first grocery store then when the hurricane came took the roof off then they I think they restored it I'm not I I'm just I'm not sure but then the building on the next block that was the new grocery store and um that grocery store they um they had um delivery trucks they had 12 people that would just take orders they want to pull the butcher shop in there you could get anything that you could imagine that you wanted here by wines exotic wines um chocolate covered grasshoppers I hate anything that anybody wanted was available and The Butcher Shop was you
know foreign which is connected to that and then that was the drugstore so then I had a drugstore counter everything and then at the corner which is now um it's like a little dress shop or something but that was a Wilson's phone card so that was a florist shop and then the two-story building which was there that was um when it was first built it was it was more like a um yeah we could get um all kinds of things there that go to the grocery store but then it became a grocery store and it was a leopard shop there and then to the South was the post office so that was all connected in
that building and your apartments up on the second floor to people who live in the apartments upstairs the staircase that went up in the corner to the second floor Apartments Daniel went out his meetings when they first came in there it was just kind of like it was they started small like everybody and just got batting on you know and um they had like a little uh open air um where you can get grapes and everything and then they have to expand anything sad to see it just be empty so you could go there and get all your Hawaiian clothes you're going to Hawaii just buy your Hawaiian clothes before you get there because the
same ones were they don't know why you buy everything and bring it back and sell it to us the probably cheaper than what you would buy and you'll buy it in Hawaii so very special yes where did the word Hope come from and Jupiter right um probably connected with Jupiter because Jupiter was to the south of us when they first started it was called folkestown East and West that Jupiter Island was so sad piece and we have the west side of the inner Coastal was West and then they changed um there was there was that one time Pope sound with golden people and so there was a whole controversy about Olympia homes down what the
name of it was going to be and so finally um they had a petition um for postmaster just kind of told them they had to make up their mind what they were going to do soup problems and uh finally they just settled on no sound I'm not really you know I think it was like a well they say uh the Hobie Indians were in that area and that goes Way Way Back foreign 1890 or so I mean it goes way back and it was from the people that lived there and they would have had every Sunday afternoon half on sale races in the sound a lot of times things stand up just fine how to
use this but there is controversy and where the name came from so they attributed to the home Canadians the so anything else any other questions thank you very much
